a painter in the slow tradition
I paint people and the things they live with, in oil, from life.
My work lives in the long-look tradition — portraits, figures, and still lifes built slowly in oil, the way they've been built for hundreds of years. I work from life when I can, from reference when I must, and always with the charcoal underpainting showing through the final surface.
A painting, to me, is a record of attention. The hours are in there — in the texture, in the corrections, in the places the hand went back. That visible history is what makes a painted face hold a room in a way a photograph never quite can.
I take a small number of commissions each year. If you have a person, a place, or a small constellation of objects you want kept — in pigment, for a long time — I'd be glad to talk.
